Berto Altman

Robert Altman has pretty interesting directing style I feel that through much of the films he merely leads you through the plot. He in effect doesn't command you to watch something, he more so suggests things to look at. That's really confusing, but then again so are his movies. Like say in Nashville, he constantly jumps from one character to the other. At first this leaves you wondering if there is something that connects them all, but then because they all seem so disconnected this idea soon vanishes. Not only is his "free flowing camera" really confusing, but so is he use of dialog, or trialog as I'm going to call it because there is never just two people talking, we tend to hear other conversations or people talking on top of the characters shown in the frame. I didn't understand where he was coming from with The Player. He really didn't seem like the murder mystery type from his first two movies, but alas a creative mind can never be truly understood.

Elliot I also feel that Altman leads you through the plot and just suggests things for you to look at and see. I think that is one of the best parts of his movies because it gets you involved so much into them. I think he was just satirizing movie exec. and others in Hollywood during the player, because he did love to use satire in his movies.

I think Altman intends for his movies to have repeat viewings. However, you have to be drawn in enough by a first viewing to want to watch it a second time. This doesn't seem to be the case with his movies; Nashville didn't appeal to me either, and I'm satisfied with one viewing with the other two. Trialog is an awesome word.

I kind of like how he has seemingly disconnected plots because that's how our lives operate. We constantly are in new scenes and react accordingly.

Yeah Elliot i agree with you that he intertwines the plots of his films together. I thought the most confusing film we watched was "Nashville" when it came to trying to understand what was going on.

I've never thought about how altman suggests that you view his movie. It's complicated to explain but I think this is true. It's kind of his unique style. I liked Altman for his creative and complicated scenes and dialogue. It really makes you pay attention very closely to whats going on in his films.
